The Township of Black River-Matheson is located on Highway 11 and lies 56 kilometres northwst of Kirkland Lake, 65 kilometres east of Timmins. With over 150 pristine lakes and rivers, the township is an all-season paradise for outdoor enthusiasts: from fishing and hunting to paddling and snowmobiling. Spanning 1,161 square kilometres, Black River-Matheson blends its rich mining, forestry, and farming industries with its thriving outdoor tourism scene.

High Season

Summertime in Black River-Matheson offers an array of outdoor activities for all ages. The township’s beaches, like those at Gauthier and Talbock Lakes, provide the perfect spots for swimming, picnicking, or simply unwinding under the sun. Those looking for adventure can launch their canoes at the Matheson boat dock to explore the nearby Abitibi de Troyes Provincial Park, renowned for its backcountry camping and fishing. For families, the township offers multiple playgrounds, ballparks, and even an outdoor volleyball area at Hough Lake, making it a lively destination during the warmer months.

Winter

The township features over 384 kilometres of groomed snowmobile trails, drawing riders from across the region to its beautiful landscapes and 10 feet of annual snowfall. Ice fishing on Lake Abitibi or the Black River is a favourite pastime, offering some of the best opportunities in Northern Ontario for avid anglers and families alike. Visitors can also enjoy snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and hockey. With winter festivals and outdoor rinks in February, there’s no shortage of reasons to embrace the cold season here.
